Presidents Cup Team Preview – Snake Island Muskies

Muskies2015 was a trying season for the Snake Island Muskies, winners of the Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League (TNSLL). Caughnawaga Indians withdrew from the league in April, then days before the season was scheduled to open 2014 league champion Akwesasne Outlawz announced they would be taking a one-year hiatus. That left just two league teams, Snake Island and Tyendinaga Wolfpack, for the season. In past seasons TNSLL teams have played a cross-over schedule with the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League (QSLL) and fortunately an arrangement was made for a limited schedule in 2015. Snake Island was able to play 10 games against QSLL teams in addition to the six league matchups with the Wolfpack.TNSLL

Snake Island (10-7) finished a perfect 6-0 against Tyendinaga during the regular season and defeated the Wolfpack in the TNSLL Championship game played on August 8 by the score of 21-9. It’s the second league title, first since 2011, for coach Ernie Mitchell and the Muskies.

Leading the Muskies offense this season is Joe Hall (23 goals, 35 assists), who’s 58 points was third-highest among QSLL scorers. Other top scorers are Lee Thomas (17 goals, 17 assists), Shane Francis (9 goals, 23 assists) and Cody Kilcoyne (20 goals, 9 assists).

Snake Island Muskies Presidents Cup schedule

Monday: vs Nanaimo Timbermen (WCSLA), 1:00 PM

Tuesday: vs Six Nations Rivermen (OSBLL), 2:00 PM

Wednesday: vs Rockyview Knights (RMLL), 11:00 AM

Presidents Cup Team Preview – Nova Scotia

For the first time since 1990, a team representing Nova Scotia will compete at the Presidents Cup Senior B tournament. The four-team Nova Scotia Senior Lacrosse League (NSSLL) was “reborn” in 2011 after being absent for several years. Now those teams will combine for one all-star team to show that the province belongs back among the regular tournament leagues.Privateers

Coached by Rod Humphreys of the Bedford Fighting Orangutans, the Nova Scotia Privateers will feature a roster of players from all league members, including 11 players from the league champion Halifax Hustle. Former New England College (NCAA Division III) and Dalhousie University (MUFLL) player Jamie Dunbar captains the group, one of several players with college lacrosse experience. Dunbar led the Twin City Arrows with 17 goals, 16 assists (fifth highest in the league) this summer.

Another player to watch is Dominik Pešek, a Czech Republic national team player, who was the league MVP. Pešek led all scorers scoring 29 goals and 31 assists in 15 games with the Halifax Hustle. The 23-year old, who has aspirations of playing full-time in North America, first arrived in 2013 scoring 62 points with the Victoria Jr. Shamrocks (BCJALL). He has also played with LCC Custodes Radotín – one of the top Senior clubs in Europe. At the prestigious Aleš Hřebeský Memorial tournament in April, Pešek led all scorers (16 goals, 6 assists in 6 games).

Mitch Hannigan (Fighting Orangutans) and Matt Cote (Hustle) will man the nets for the Privateers, who hope it will not be another 25 years before their next tournament appearance.

Halifax Hustle Win First NSSLL Title

Halifax Hustle captured their first league championship on Thursday night, winning the Nova Scotia Senior Lacrosse League (NSSLL) in Sackville. The Hustle defeated the Halifax Colby Pool Sharks 7-5 in Game 2 of the NSSLL Finals to sweep the series and capture the Harrison Cup.NSLax

Formed in 2011 with the rebirth of the Nova Scotia league, Halifax Hustle struggled their first four seasons. Finishing at or near the bottom of the four-team standings, their fortunes changed in 2015 when the Hustle finished 7-3-1 during the regular season and earn the top seed for the league playoffs. A two-game sweep over the Bedford Fighting Orangutans in the semifinals sent the team to the finals flying with confidence.

In the best-of 3 finals the Hustle would meet the Sharks, who upset second-seed Twin City Arrows in the semifinals. In Game 1 the Hustle turned a tightly contested affair into a route with five goals in the second period and 7-1 lead into the final frame. Hustle went on to secure a 9-1 victory.

Ian McShane scored four goals and added two helpers for a six point night. Colin Werle assisted on two of those McShane goals and finished with four assists on the night. Jay Titchmarsh (2 goals, 1 assist), Chris Taylor (2 goals) and Louis Martin (1 goal) rounded out scoring. Winning goaltender was Matt Cote.

Game 2 was a tighter affair, but the result the same as the Hustle swept the series with a 7-5 victory. Brett MacNeil scored the opening goal to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead, their first of the series. The Hustle answered minutes later when Gavin Abramson found the back of the net. First intermission had the teams even 1-1.

Sharks took the lead once again when Scott Berrigan scored at 11:10 of the second. Late period goals by Chris Taylor and Abramson saw the Hustle take their first lead of the game into the locker room with 20 minutes to play.

Momentum had taken a turn and the Hustle came out to the floor in the third period with drive to close the series. Ian McShane scored at 14:37 followed by a pair from Dan Axford and suddenly the score was 6-2. Sanchez Clarke did score three goals for the Sharks in the final 6:27 of the period, but it was too late. Halifax Hustle walked away with their first league championship!

The league now turns it attention to the 2015 Presidents Cup. A group of league all-stars will compete at the annual Senior B championship, this year held in St. Catharines, Ontario beginning August 31. Nova Scotia Privateers are in Pool B with host St. Catharines Saints (OSBLL), Capital Region Axemen (QSLL) and defending champion Onondaga Redhawks (Can-Am). 2015 will be the first appearance at Presidents Cup by a Nova Scotia representative since 1990.
