St. Louis Park Wins Third MBSLA Title

SLPlaxSt. Louis Park have been  a dominant force on the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association (MBSLA) circuit for a long time. The Orioles won their first MBSLA title in 2008 and have played in each championship game since. On June 7 St. Louis Park won a third championship, defeating Duluth 12-6.

In 2009 St. Louis Park hoped to repeat as champs only to fall in the final to Orono 8-7. Revenge was gained in the 2010 championship as the Orioles stopped Orono 10-6 for their second title. A three-year drought followed as each season ended on the wrong side of the scoreboard in that final game.

A few players have been a part of the program for four-straight years, including senior Carlos Siguenza, and were determined not to go home second-place again. The team leader in scoring, Siguenza was dominant at the faceoff circle (winning 12 of 16). He scored three goals and assisted on two others to help lead the Orioles to a third championship.

The championship against Duluth, previously unbeaten, was a back-and-forth affair for more than two quarters. A Bryce Holak goal early in the third tied the game 3-3, but a three-goal run by Park provided some confidence. The Chargers got one back while a man-up to make the score 6-4 at the end of the third quarter.

The final 12 minutes belonged to St. Louis Park (18-2), who would not be denied this night. Siguenza scored his second and third goals of the game early in the quarter, part of a four-goal run and the Orioles went on to the victory.
