Brad MacArthur Takes Over Barrie Bench

Barrie Blizzard GM Rob Blasdell decided a change was needed for his struggling club so he stepped down as head coach this week. After an 0-3 start to the 2014 Canadian Lacrosse League season, Brad MacArthur will take over as bench coach effective immediately. All current Blizzard assistant coaches will continue in their roles with the team.

MacArthur was also promoted to head coach of the Clarington Green Gaels in November. He will attempt to guide the second-year Blizzard out of the cellar of the CLax standings, a place the team ended 2013 in with a record of 3-11.

Things won’t be easy early on for MacArthur, who face the league-leading Ohsweken Demons on Sunday (3-0) at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Blizzard do enjoy one of the largest group of supporters in the league and with the coaching change the team hope to reward those fans with better results on the floor.

Brad MacArthur recent coaching bio:
2014-present: Israel National Indoor Team, Associate Head Coach
2014-present: Clarington Green Gaels, Head Coach
2011-2013: Clarington Green Gaels, Assistant Coach
2013: Team Ontario Midget, Assistant Coach

CLax Press Release:

The Barrie Blizzard announced Tuesday that their team’s coaching and management team has been modified.

Effective immediately, Rob Blasdell will focus his attention solely on the General Manager’s role. Blasdell’s wealth of experience is a valuable asset for the Blizzard having spent 11 years in the NLL as one of the league’s elite goaltenders, winning NLL Goaltender of the Year in 2002 as a member of the Albany Attack. Fellow NLL Veteran Brad MacArthur will step into the Blizzard’s Head Coach’s position.

Barrie resident Brad MacArthur was recently announced as the new Head Coach of the Jr. B Clarington Green Gaels as well as Team Israel as they head to the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in New York. As a player, MacArthur spent seven seasons in the NLL with Rochester, Montreal, Calgary, and Toronto

Joining Blasdell in the head office will be Sr. B Owen Sound North Stars President/General Manager Randy Jackson, who will come in to assist the General Manager.

CLax representative Chris Newsome said “CLax thanks the many continued supporters of the Barrie team and applauds the additional efforts.”

Current Assistant Coaches Brian Beisel, Rich Marwick and former player Mike MacLeod will remain on the coaching staff in their current roles.
