Edmonton (6-0) currently sit atop the NLL standings having yet to lose. This week the Rush travel to St. Paul to face the struggling Swarm (1-5). Entering the league at nearly the same time (Minnesota in 2005, Edmonton in 2006) these two clubs have had mixed results over the years. The Swarm have an overall record of 70-89, including one division title in 2008. For two years in a row Minnesota has come close to playing for the Champions Cup only to lose in the division finals. Their opponent that stopped their run in 2012 was none other than the Edmonton Rush.
The Rush have had similar successes over their nine year history, but winning six-straight to open this season has Edmonton thinking their time may have come. Over those years the Rush have compiled a 55-85 record, but lost that 2012 Champions Cup game to Rochester. Despite the records, I expect this game to be very competitive and would not be surprised to see the young Swarm pull off an upset.
Maybe the most intriguing matchup of the weekend in the NLL, Rochester (4-2) travel to Toronto (3-3) on Saturday night. Coming off a 20-10 demolition of Philadelphia last week, the Rock will look to remain undefeated at Air Canada Centre this season. Like Toronto, the Knighthawks have yet to lose at their home in Rochester. At 0-2 on the road, Rochester will try to snap two streaks.
Canadian Lacrosse League enters Week 3 of play this week, the Niagara (3-0) atop the standings. The Lock Monsters will face Durham (1-1) Sunday and Ohsweken on Monday. The Demons (1-0) will first play a rematch with last weeks opponent, SouthWest Cyclops. A 40-goal shootout was won by Ohsweken 21-19 when Josh Johnson scored his fourth of the game with 5:27 remaining. The teams meet again on Friday at ILA.
