SouthWest Cyclops are a new entry into the Canadian Lacrosse League, but are not a new club. Playing as the Brampton Inferno last season, the team finished the regular season with an 8-6 record. A three-team tie for second place finish in the standings saw Brampton seeded fourth for the CLax playoffs, where the Inferno suffered a first round exit after a 11-9 loss to fifth place Durham TurfDogs.
The Cyclops will play their home games at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in 2014 until a permanent home in southwestern Ontario can be worked out for next year. In reality, all eight league games will be “away” for the Cyclops this season. That may work out for the club, who were 6-1 in road games (just 2-5 at home) last year.
Leading scorer Ryan Campbell (58 pts.) returns to lead the Cyclops offense. The third year pro, Campbell was the seventh leading scorer in CLax last season. Adding to the offensive threat, SouthWest traded for a pair of proven scorers. Shane Scott joins the Cyclops after scoring 31 goals (47 pts.) for Durham in 2013. 34-year old Kim Squire (53 pts.) comes to SouthWest after an impressive 2013 campaign with Niagara Lock Monsters. Edmonton Rush Practice Squad prospect Mike Burke will also be counted on to provide offense.
